Dart Lower Ferry Slipways

This South Hams District Council project involved the removal of decaying timber fenders to the historic Lower Ferry slipways on both the Dartmouth and Kingswear sides of the River Dart, as well as enlarging the footprint of the slipway with the overlaying of the existing deteriorating slipway with a new concrete and embedded crane rail bearing surface. Installation of new, hardwearing and shock-absorbing timber and rubber marine quality fendering and associated masonry repairs were also part of the project.

We undertook the role of CDM Coordinator in line with the requirements of the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2007, and worked closely with the design and project delivery team, undertaking numerous site visits to check and comment on project design and construction activities with specific attention to health and safety and compliance with the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2007 and associated legislation.

Our teams also assessed and commented on the Principal Contractor’s project documentation including method statements, risk assessments, health and safety plans.

Overlaying of the new slipways, with raised height, was completed successfully to the satisfaction of the Client. Public consultation, communication and traffic management was maintained at a high level of importance throughout the project. The project delivery team successfully overcame numerous construction issues with clear communication and a positive, combined professional approach.

South Hams District Council had an essential and necessary project delivered to their satisfaction providing a robust, safer and more effective service delivery area at Dartmouth and Kingswear slipways for passengers using the Lower Ferry service. The new slipways and fendering systems installed are designed with a product life of at least 25 years - a sound investment to maintain and enhance the lives of residents and visitors to the region. South Hams District Council, a valued client received a professional and efficient service from TDA.
